I started my IT career over a decade ago, climbing the ranks and honing my craft in various technical and managerial roles. During my tenure at an MNC, I was fortunate to work with an IT supplier who provided reliable, professional support in setting up complex network equipment. Their dedication left a lasting impression on me—and when a family member’s growing business needed qualified IT guidance, it felt natural to recommend their services.
At the time, I was working full-time, so I supported my family member’s company primarily as a Data Protection Officer (DPO) and on small projects aimed at optimizing IT costs. All infrastructure, backup, and licensing responsibilities were left in the hands of the vendor I recommended.
The Ransomware Attack That Changed Everything
Everything changed in early 2025. My family member’s business became the victim of a severe ransomware attack. Within hours, all on-premise data—including backups—was irretrievably lost. The only survivor? A NAS device I had personally configured for Microsoft 365 backups with Multi-Factor Authentication.

Looking back, my decision to initiate a migration from on-premise servers to cloud services in mid-2024 proved invaluable. While we lost six months of accounting data and significant amounts of personal information (necessitating a data breach notification to local authorities), the business was able to continue operating thanks to secure, cloud-based systems.
Uncovering the Rotten Core of the Traditional Singaporean MSP Model
During the post-attack investigation, the true extent of the vendor’s negligence came to light. Security best practices had been routinely ignored:
- Out-of-date firewall firmware riddled with unpatched zero-day vulnerabilities
- Weak, easily guessed passwords across every server—including backups
- No multi-factor authentication anywhere
- Passwords stored in unsecured Excel spreadsheets, later shared with me (!)
- A flawed backup architecture that let a breached server wipe all backups
- No offsite or immutable backups
As someone who always strives for operational excellence, these lapses were shocking. But the real jaw-dropper came when I went through a year’s worth of invoices. The company had paid just under S$2,000 for actual IT services, but the total expenditure was S$30,000. The vendor had padded their bills by selling unnecessary hardware and software—much of it outdated or unsuited to our needs. Even critical tools, like Veeam backup software, were configured in ways that rendered them useless during a crisis.
For a small business, this was more than just disappointing—it was exploitative.
